Rui Mourão (PT)
Rui Mourão (1977, Lisbon) is an artist and researcher in artistic studies. He works in video art in relation to audiovisual anthropology, writing, installation, and performance. He studied arts at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Centre for Cinematographic Studies of Catalonia; at Escola Maumaus in Lisbon; and at the Malmö Art Academy in Sweden. He completed a postgraduate degree in Digital Visual Cultures and a Master’s degree in Anthropology, both at ISCTE. He is currently a PhD candidate in Artistic Studies at the Nova University of Lisbon, with an FCT scholarship. He received the Public Award at FUSO – Annual International Video Art Festival of Lisbon (2010), the Portuguese Anthropology Association Award for Best Audiovisual Essay (2019), and Honourable Mentions in experimental film categories at the Art Film Awards (2021), Athens International Monthly Art Film Festival (2021), and VIFF – Venice Intercultural Film Festival (2022). He participated in GIBCA Extended – Gothenburg International Biennial of Contemporary Art (2021). He has undertaken various artistic residencies, collaborations, conferences, articles, and books (notably Ensaio de Artivismo – Vídeo e Performance, published by the Museu do Chiado). He has exhibited in over 100 exhibitions, festivals, and shows across 17 countries, including notable venues such as: Carpintarias de São Lázaro (Lisbon, 2023); Skövde Art Museum (Sweden, 2021); National Museum of Ethnology (Lisbon, 2019 and 2012); Galpão Vídeo Brasil (São Paulo, 2018); National Museum of Contemporary Art – Museu do Chiado (Lisbon, 2018 and 2014); Whitworth Art Gallery (Manchester, 2017); Spaces (Cleveland, 2016); Iklectik (London, 2015); BTM (Budapest, 2013); Palazzo Albrizzi (Venice, 2012); Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin, 2010); National Centre for Contemporary Art (Moscow, 2008); Monkey Town (New York, 2007).
