Luca Argel (BR/ PT)
Luca Argel was born in 1988 in Rio de Janeiro and has been living in Portugal for over 10 years. He holds a degree in Music from UNIRIO and a master’s degree in Literature from the University of Porto. He is the singer and composer for the groups Samba Sem Fronteiras and Orquestra Bamba Social. As a writer, he has published poetry books in Brazil, Spain, and Portugal, one of which was a semifinalist for the 2017 Oceanos Prize. For two years, he hosted the daily segment “Boi com Abóbora” on Rádio Nova (Porto). He regularly works on creating soundtracks for film and dance, and as a solo artist, he has released five albums. He has sung Fernando Pessoa’s poems with Ana Deus, celebrated José Mário Branco with Mitó Mendes, experimented with hip hop with Keso, rock with Filipe Sambado, and protest songs with A Garota Não.In 2016, he released his debut album, Tipos que tendem para o silêncio, followed by Bandeira in 2017 and Conversa de Fila in 2019, both praised for the intelligence of their lyrics and the sweetness of his voice. In 2021, he returned with the critically acclaimed Samba de Guerrilha, a conceptual album recognized as one of the best releases of the year in Portugal, where Luca Argel revives the memory and recreates old sambas with an inventive and radically transformed musicality. As the creator of projects and a deep researcher and promoter of samba in Portugal, with a focus on protest music that runs through his works, Luca is preparing to release his sixth solo album, Visita, set to be released in October.
