JOURNALISM, MUSIC AND REPRESENTATION: A CONVERSATION WITH PUJA PATEL

Thursday, 26 September14h00 - 15h00Sala dos Fornos ENTREVISTA / KEYNOTE INTERVIEW

Puja Patel, a music journalist from New York, is one of the most influential voices in the music industry. After six years as executive editor of Pitchfork, she left the publication earlier this year when Pitchfork was integrated into GQ magazine. A feminist and a tireless advocate for racialized and queer artists, she has used her platform to promote significant changes in the sector. Her time at Pitchfork stood out for the diversity and representativeness she brought to the magazine’s music reviews and festivals, offering visibility to various genres and artists who were often under-represented.

Before that, Puja was editor of SPIN, culture editor of Deadspin and collaborated with Rolling Stone, Washington Post, VICE, FADER and local New York newspaper The Village Voice. In addition to music journalism, her work with organizations such as Building Beats, which promotes music education for young people from underprivileged communities, reinforces her commitment to social impact through music and education.

In this interview, conducted by Miguel Rocha, Puja Patel will address crucial topics such as representation in music journalism, the marketization and capitalization of journalism, journalistic ethics and the mental health of professionals in the field. Based on these topics, this is a conversation about the future of cultural journalism and the fundamental role of diversity and ethics in the sector.
