Toty Sa’Med (AO)

Toty Sa’med is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, born in Luanda in 1989. He is one of the leading cult artists of the New Angolan Music.

His influences range from psychedelic rock to jazz, but it all began with african music, a constant presence since his childhood. At 8 years old, his mounting interest for the vinyl records and concert VHS tapes collected by his parents, led them to buy him his first guitar and keyboard. It wasn’t long until he began composing and producing rap, kuduro and kizomba instrumentals for his friends, at his little home studio, but his overwhelming passion for the sembas of the Ngola Ritmos generation and for Brasilian Popular Music, led him to abandon his experimentations, and to fully dedicate himself to the guitar.

Celebrated by the new generation musicians like Aline Frazão, Gari Sinedima and Selda, with whom he frequently collaborates, he is also aplauded by the ‘kotas’, such as Paulo Flores and Filipe Mukenga, who asked him to join his band as he returned to the stage. The Mingas family, whose path is the one of angolan music’s own evolution, recognized his talent, inviting him to celebrate on stage, the life and work of André Mingas, and to serenade the patriarch Ruy Mingas for his golden wedding anniversary, interpreting songs which are the essential matter of this young singer- songwriter’s identity.

In 2016, he again takes the Sembas, with the mission of making them universal, by making them even more Luanda. He records and releases ‘Ingombota’, an EP that again sees him join Kalaf Epalanga, with whom he shares the records production. In the tracklist we can find five classics and an original song, with an intimate vibe, where we can feel influences that range from Bonga’s “Angola 72” to Caetano’s “Araçá Azul”.
