What are the main characteristics and behaviours of the largest Portuguese-speaking music market? How does it relate to the rest of the world, and what are the best strategies to reach it? A panel of Brazilian professionals will talk about the actual market in Brazil and speak about the opportunities the music industry offers in the country.

Adriana Belic is a cultural manager and producer. Belic is a Music Business Consultant and member of the National Council of Cultural Policies of the Brazilian Ministry of Culture (2015/2017). She is the founder and director of Belic Arte.Cultura (1995), which specializes in representing national and international artists, organizing careers, concert tours and special music projects, both in Brazil and abroad.

Founder, director and international booking manager, Antares Promoções (Brazil).

Maria Rita Stumpf is a musician, producer and manager and she is the founder and director of Antares Promoções (1987), a company that specializes in the promotion of national and international cultural events. Over time Antares increased its action in the music area and worked as a press agency for important events such as the music festival Rock in Rio. Through her company, Stumpf has been acting as an agent for several international and Brazilian artists both South America.

Director of SIM São Paulo - São Paulo Music Week / Founder of Inker Agência Cultural (Brazil)

Fabiana Batistela is the director of SIM São Paulo – São Paulo Music Week, an annual music convention held in São Paulo since 2013. She is also the founder of Inker Agência Cultural (2002), an agency focused on press advisory, consultancy and PR for artists and music events. Inker’s wide portfolio includes several Brazilian new musical productions, aside from countless international band tours in the country.

Many artists build their careers in a particular place but, at the same time, they have ambition to go further afield and win international recognition. How does one plan an international campaign in a way that it reaches the main European and international markets? This talk gathers a panel of international experts and professionals from different sectors of the music industry, to present and talk about the various types of campaigns and key strategies to promote artists and their work internationally.

Pedro Trigueiro has been working in different fields of the music industry for several years, either as a journalist, a manager, an agent or a producer. He is the founder and manager of Arruada, an agency that manages and promotes a vast rooster of artists and bands, including Buraka Som Sistema, Mallu Magalhães or Regula. He is the executive producer of several award-wining albuns and has worked, as a producer, booker and consultant to a range of festivals, like Globaile, Lisboa Dance Festival and EDP Cool Jazz Festival.

Co-founder and manager, Junzi Arts (France)

Clotaire founded Junzi Arts, in January 2013. Junzi is a booking agent and tour promoter worldwide and represents the likes of Woodkid, Chassol, AaRON and Broken Back. Prior to that, he worked for over a dozen years for Paris-based agency Caramba, which specialized in world music. During this time he developed from scratch acts such as Imany, Zaz, Ben l'Oncle Soul and Woodkid that would go on to win European Border Breaker awards and sell out arenas across Europe.

Allan McGowan has over forty-five years of experience in the music industry as a record retail, a concert promoter, artist manager, and booking agent. He is News Editor for Vip News, an online data and news service for the live music industry, and is Associate Editor of IQ Magazine – the monthly journal of the International Live Music Conference. He also administrates music-publishing company Wintrup Songs Ltd and has consulted to many international trade events including ILMC in London, Noorderslag Seminar/Eurosonic Festival in Holland, and MaMa Paris.

PAULO VENTURA (PT)
Manager, producer and booker / Founder, Metronomo (Portugal)

Paulo Ventura has been an active agent in the Portuguese music scene for the last three decades. He started out as a road manager and programmer in the late 80’s and since then he has acted as manager, booker, producer and promoter. He has worked with the biggest music companies in Portugal and has been a producer at some of the biggest summer festivals (Super Bock Super Rock, Cool Jazz Fest, Sumol Summer Fest, Vilar de Mouros, Optimus Alive, to name just a few). Paulo Ventura is the founder and manager of Metronomo agency, managing artists such as The Legendary Tigerman, Wraygunn, Linda Martini and Capitão Fausto.

CLEMENTINE BUNEL (UK)
Founder, 2 For the Road (UK) / Live agent, ATC Live (UK)

Clementine Bunel is the founder and director of 2 For the Road Events (2009), a London-based company representing and presenting some of the world’s most exciting artists for performance in the UK and internationally. She is also a live agent for ATC Live, an independent artist booking agency based in London. Her rooster includes La Roux, Benjamin Clementine, José James, Bebel Gilberto, Batida, , Stromae, , Calypso Rose, among many others. 
TALK | POLITICS AND CONTEMPORARY POP MUSIC: A POSSIBLE RELATIONSHIP?
CÂMARA MUNICIPAL DE LISBOA | 15.00 – 16.30

This session will explore the role of politics in the music industry, and consider how this relationship operates in different regions of the world. At a time where public subsidies for the cultural and creative sectors are decreasing, we need to think about new, alternative ways to distribute the available resources. Is there a better way of rethinking city planning and reassessing social and cultural politics, in order to achieve new cultural ambitions?

MIGUEL HONRADO, the Portuguese Secretary of State of Culture, will attend this discussion, with a brief introduction to the topic.

Paula Guerra is an Associate Professor of Sociology and a researcher at the University of Porto, where currently she coordinates the subgroup Artistic Creation, Cultural Practices and Policies. She is a published author and has recently co-authored The edited collection: DIY Cultures and Underground Music Scenes (Oxford: Routledge, 2017). Other publications include On the road to the American Underground (University of Porto, 2015), As Palavras do Punk [The words of punk] (Lisbon: Alêtheia, 2015), and A instável leveza do rock [The unstable lightness of rock] (Porto: Afrontamento, 2013).

Gustavo Cardoso is a Professor of "Media and Society" at ISCTE - Lisbon University Institute. His research interests include communication and media studies, the information society, cultural industries and telecommunications. Between 1996 and 2006 he was adviser to the Portuguese Republic and in 2008 was chosen by the World Economic Forum as a Young Global Leader. He is co-editor with Manuel Castells of the book "Network Society: from Knowledge to Policy" and with Jeff Cole and Angus Cheong of "World Wide Internet".

Aurélie Fontaine is a project manager at music:LX, the Luxembourg Export Office, whose aim is to promote Luxembourgish artists on international scale. Her main activity consists in developing pop, rock, electronic and jazz music. Previous to her current position, she was a project manager at the Colmar International Festival for Classical Music (France) and worked at the French Export Office in Paris and Tokyo.

RUI VIEIRA NERY (PT)
Musicologist

Rui Vieira Nery holds a BA in History from the University of Lisbon (1980) and a PhD in Musicology from the University of Texas (Austin, 1990), which he attended as a Fulbright scholar and fellow of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He is currently a professor of the Department of Musical Sciences at the New University of Lisbon and Director of the Gulbenkian Programme of Portuguese Language and Culture. As a musicologist he is the author of several studies on the History of Portuguese Music, two of which received the Musical Prize of the Portuguese Music Council (1984,1992), as well as a large number of scientific articles published in magazines and specialized collective works, both Portuguese and International.

GUNNAR MADSEN (DK)
Chairman, NOMEX – Nordic Music Export Programme / Managing Director, Rosa Rock Council

NOMEX’s chairman Gunnar Madsen has tried everything in music – except for standing on a stage himself. For a number of years he was a roadie, tour manager and booker for some of Denmark’s most popular bands, and he has been involved in music-political work since his teenage years. He was the initiator/co-founder of LMS – Live Music in School and he was very much involved in the Danish Venue law (2000) and for years he has worked with the build-up and optimisation of Danish music export, notably as Deputy Chairman of Music Export Denmark. Gunnar is an industrious visitor and debater at international conferences, where he gladly passes on Danish experiences and absorbs those of international colleagues.
TALK | THE CREATIVE FORCE OF INDEPENDENT LABELS ON THE MUSIC MARKET

The advent of digital technology brought radical changes to the relationship between the different elements inside the music industry. In this debate, the role of the independent labels and their relationship with the music industry will be discussed. With the economic crisis, the major record labels partially resigned their role of monitoring artists they represented. Did these developments benefit or paralyse the progress of independent labels? How do these independent bodies contribute to the creative process? Moreover, how do they see their future in the digital era?

Rui Portulez works as A&R at NorteSul, a sub-label of Valentim de Carvalho. He's the author of several documentaries about the independent Portuguese music scene ("I love my label" with Antena 3 and RTP 2). He worked as a radio host (RUC, XFM, Oxigénio) and as a music journalist at Público.

DJ / Founding member of the DJ duo Celeste/Mariposa 

A man of many affairs, Wilson is a founding member of local label Celeste/Mariposa and one of the most famous record collectors and DJs from Lisbon. He is passionate about the music and rythms of Portuguese-speaking territories. Through his label, he releases outstanding and forgotten musicians and as a DJ he shows them all over the world. He has collaborated with ANALOG AFRICA's latest release "Space Echo - The Mystery Behind the Cosmic Sound of Cabo Verde”.

ZÉ ANTÓNIO MOURA (PT)
DJ and Sound Artist / Music critic / Programmer / Co-founder, Príncipe Label (Portugal)

Zé António Moura is a DJ and sound artist who works in different fields in the music industry. In 2011, he co-founded Principe, a record label based in Lisbon that is fully dedicated to releasing 100% real contemporary dance music coming out of the city, its suburbs, projects & slums. He is also a co-founder of FLUR (2001), an independent record shop, located in Lisbon and has been working as a music critic and a radio director and host for over 20 years. Additionally, Zé Moura has programmed several concerts and music festivals over the years.

Co-Founder and manager, Omnichord Records (Portugal)

Hugo Ferreira created Omnichord Records in 2012 convinced that bands from the Portuguese local scene deserved to have their music released. The roster focuses on indie, rock, folk, electronic and classic artists such as First Breath After Coma, Nice Weather for Ducks, Surma, Les Crazy Coconuts, Twin Transistors, Few Fingers, Born A Lion, André Barros, Whales, Bússola, The Allstar Project.

Artistic director, Jarring Effects (França)

Céline is the artistic director, with Mister Mo (Label Manager), of Jarring Effects, the famous French independent label of electronic music influenced by everything from dub to Hip-Hop. In addition, Jarring Effects also works with a broader catalogue of pop artists: Erotic Market, Interlope and with international artists Capetown Effects, Filastine, Virus Syndicate, Oddateee, Reverse Engineering, Scorn, Vuneny, Playdoe and Ben Sharpa.

For years, options for the future of the musical industry have been imagined. But the digital revolution disrupted the musical landscape. Commercial flows changed and are now in different hands. Transparency and equal distribution of the music industry's resources and revenues are some of the preoccupations that affect the industry in the digital era and will be debated in this session.

Virginia DIAS CARON has been working in the music and entertainment industry for more than 15 years. In Brazil, she worked as communication manager, producer and artist manager (Os Mutantes, Beto Lee), as well as in the executive production of multiple audiovisual projects. With a Master degree in Law and Film Business at Sorbonne, it has been 5 years Virginia has developed international projects in music and film areas between France and Brazil. She is now in charge of over 600 Brazilian members of Sacem (such as Gilberto Gil, Jorge Ben, Chico Buarque, Carlinhos Brown), to whom she is the liaison for the Portuguese-speaking members, in particular the Brazilian ones.

AKOTCHAYE OKIO (FR)
International Development Officer for Africa, Sacem - Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers of Music

He has been involved in the music industry for 20 years. First as an artist, then he worked within the cultural entrepreneurship in Africa in order to contribute to the structuring of the sector. He has been a festival and a talent show promoter, as well as Editor of a cultural magazine. Member of the Board of Directors of the National Artistic Ensemble of Benin. Based in France for several years, he continues to work closely with Africa. He has served as Channel Manager Africa at Believe Digital.Today, he is International Development Officer for Africa at SACEM, and works on the progress of copyright on the continent.

Musician, Efterklang/Liima

Casper Clausen, is the singer and founding member of renowned Danish ensemble Efterklang and newly found band Liima (Efterklang + Tatu Rönnkö). He is also co-founder of sound art radio station The Lake Radio and the record label Rumraket.

Paulo Gouveia is the delegate to GDA, a public and non-profit organization that represents artists' rights in Portugal. He is also an indie pop musician that performs under the alter ego Gomo.

Martin Elbourne is based in the UK and has over forty years of experience in the music industry. He is one of the main bookers for the Glastonbury Festival and is a Creative Director of The Great Escape Festival in Brighton. Martin was a co-founder of WOMAD Festival with Peter Gabriel and has been an agent for The Smiths and New Order. He has owned a record label and a music magazine, and has acted as a manager, agent, promoter, booker, international live music consultant and was commissioned to be the official ‘thinker in residence’, reporting on music policy, for the South Australian government. He is also working internationally as president of MusikThinkSki, music consultant to NH7 in India, ‘M for Montreal’ in Canada and for Music Cities Convention. Martin is an advisor to various governments for live music and is on the advisory board of both Music Glue and Sound Diplomacy.

What are the main criteria for booking an artist for a festival? What are the possible scenarios? What problems and approaches can we anticipate? From sales to social media interaction and press coverage, which are the most relevant audience indicators? How does the relationship between the music programmer and the other professionals of the sector affect their work? These and other questions will be debated by a group of European programmers who will meet to talk about their work and share their vision about the main challenges of the art of music programming.

Isilda is a music journalist and a radio host. She wrote for several Portuguese newspapers, mostly about music. She started working on the radio in the mid 90's, and in 1999, she founded Radio Oxigenio. In 2015, Isilda joined Antena 3, Portugal's state radio channel dedicated to pop culture.

Fruzsina is festival director for Lollapalooza Berlin and board member of Yourope, the European Festival Association. Booker and Music Programmer, Música no Coração (Portugal)

Vanessa Careta is a booker, music programmer and talent buyer for Música no Coração, a company that promotes festivals throughout Portugal. These include boutique events, like Vodafone Mexefest and Caixa Alfama and Ribeira, to the larger dimension summer festivals Super Bock Super Rock and MEO Sudoeste.

STEVE ZAPP (UK)
Agent, ITB – International Talent Booking

Steve Zapp started booking bands in 1991. He booked tours while working in management in the late 90s, then started his own booking agency Reactor Live, before joining his first major agency Primary Talent. He is now a senior agent at ITB, representing artists including Editors, Biffy Clyro, Courteeners, and Rival Sons.

Ivan Santos was the Director of the Department of Culture, Youth and Sports of Praia City Council, Cape Verde between 2012 and 2016. In 2016, Ivan Santos was invited to integrate the General Direction of the Arts and the Creative Industries, giving technical support to the Cape Verdean Ministry of Culture and defining goals, priorities and policies in cultural, artistic and creative industries field.

Carlos Kessel holds a degree in Architecture from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and a Masters and PhD in Social History from the same institution. He’s also a published author. As a diplomat, he worked in the Cultural Department of Itamaraty and in the Brazil Embassies in Cape Verde, Chile and Portugal where he’s been in charge of the Cultural and Educational Sector since 2016.

Programmer and Producer / Co-Founder and partner, Lines Lab (Macau/RAEM)

Manuel Silva is a co-founder and director of Lines Lab (2006), a Macau-based design brand/lab that is active worldwide. He moved to Macau in 2002 to establish City Furniture Designers. In 2006, he co-founded the event This is My City (Macau), working as a curator and producer. Since 2011, his studio has been focusing on promoting and producing exchange programs to strengthen the cultural relations between Macau/China and Africa. In 2011, Miguel co-created the event Macau Fashion Link, and in 2016 he launched IMMO, a digital platform dedicated to enhancing the living experience in cities.

LUÍS VIEGAS (PT)
Co-founder, manager and booker, Ao Sul do Mundo, CRL (Portugal)

Luís Viegas has been working as a cultural producer and agent for almost twenty years. In 2002, he co-founded Smog, a production and management company with a roster that included Emir Kusturica & No Smoking Orchestra, Yann Tiersen, Hugh Laurie & The Copper Bottom Band, Blur, to name a few. In 2011, Viegas co-founded Ao Sul do Mundo CRL, a production, management and booking cooperative that manages artists like Selma Uamusse, Lula Pena, Rocky Marsiano, and Lisbon Underground Music Ensemble (L.U.M.E.), and is responsible for the international booking of Throes + The Shine and MEDEIROS/LUCAS. Ao Sul do Mundo has produced several portuguese-speaking artists, including Alceu Valença, Tcheka, Dona Onete, Elza Soares and the european tour of Liniker & os Caramelows.

How can a city become more attractive to artists and the public? What factors and mechanisms are behind the transformation of a city into a creative and artistic hub? MIL’s first edition will bring together a group of professionals that will analyse these questions – approaching them through economical, political, artistic, social and demographic criteria from different cities of the world – to better comprehend the city as an important creative and artistic hub.

Journalist, radio host, DJ and music critic

Nuno Galopim is a journalist, radio host, DJ and music critic. He writes regularly for Portuguese newspaper Expresso, Blitz and Metropolis magazines and is one of the authors of the webzine Typewriter and Sound + Vision blog. He has been a radio host since 1989 and he has acted as a musical consultant to RTP2, a Portuguese public TV channel. For 20 years, he was the culture editor of Diário de Notícias and he has been Billboard’s Portuguese correspondent.

Paula André has a PhD in Architecture and Urbanism by ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon. She is Assistant Professor of the Department of Architecture and Urbanism [School of Technology and Architecture]. She is a researcher at DINÂMIA’CET-IUL and a team member of the project Printed Photography: image and propaganda in Portugal (1934-1974).

JOÃO SEIXAS (PT)
Economist / Urban Geographer / Professor and Researcher at FCSH and CICS.NOVA

João Seixas is a Professor in Urban Studies, in Lisbon. Holding a PhD. in Urban Geography (Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, 2007) and in Sociology of the Territory and the Environment (ISCTE/Lisbon, in co-tutorial), his body of work focuses on the applied and scientific domains connected with cities, human geography, urban planning, urban sociology and urban politics, territorial socio-spatial systems and trends. He is a published author and the manager of Ler Devagar, an iconic bookstore and cultural project based in Lisbon, since 1999.


JOSÉ MATEUS (PT)
Architect and president of Lisbon Architecture Triennale

Graduated from FAUTL - Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon as an Architect, he’s the founder and president of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale. In 1991, he co-founded the ARX Portugal atelier. ARX projects have been widely awarded and published three monographs. Author of the TV show “Tempo e Traço” from SIC Notícias, he taught in several national and international schools and was also president and vice-president of the Southern Regional Section of Ordem dos Arquitectos (2005/07).

JOANA GOMES CARDOSO (PT)
President of EGEAC, Lisbon

Joana Gomes Cardoso is president of EGEAC, Lisbon’s municipal cultural company, since January 2015. She previously headed the Office of Planning, Strategy, Evaluation and International Relations of the Ministry of Culture (2010-2012). She holds a degree in International Relations, a Masters in Culture and Development from the Catholic University of Leuven and was admitted to the PhD program in Anthropology at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon. She was a journalist for several years in Lisbon, New York, New Delhi and Communications Director of the European Office of Amnesty International in Brussels, as well as Vice-President of Amnesty International Portugal.

He’s been the Coordinator of intervention and development projects for the last twelve years in several institutions and territories. He’s also part of distinct associations, some of them local, others for awareness about cities and urbanism. He has held several lectures on participation, commons, urban regeneration, art and culture in the development of the city. He is also a member of INURA - International Network for Urban Research and Action.
TALK | ARTISTS AND MANAGERS: REINVENTING A COLLABORATION IN PROGRESS

One role of the manager is to adapt to the artist’s reality. Nowadays, the artist-manager relationship is constantly challenged by new elements like new technologies, the economic crisis or the countless possibilities that social networks provide. What is the primary role of a manager in an artist’s career? Fund debut singles? Negotiate new contracts? Produce videos and social media content? What is the manager’s role in collecting royalties and related rights? Does the manager need to master every trick in the industry’s commercial playbook? Based on these questions, the relationship between the artist and the manager will be debated, taking into consideration the constant mutations that the sector itself imposes upon the artist and the creative process, plus production and distribution.

Miguel is the founder of Portuguese pop band Delfins (1984). He worked as an architect for Cascais Town Hall and in 1991 founded the super group Resistência and created 1 Só Céu, a recording studio based in Cascais. Miguel Magalhães is also a songwriter and a published author. He started his teaching activity in 2011, teaching courses on Production and Musical Creation in ETIC (Lisbon), where today he is the Coordinator HND in Music Production.

Paulo Ventura has been an active agent in the Portuguese music scene for the last three decades. He started out as a road manager and programmer in the late 80’s and since then he has acted as manager, booker, producer and promoter. He has worked with the biggest music companies in Portugal and has been a producer at some of the biggest summer festivals (Super Bock Super Rock, Cool Jazz Fest, Sumol Summer Fest, Vilar de Mouros, Optimus Alive, to name just a few). Paulo Ventura is the founder and manager of Metronomo agency, managing artists such as The Legendary Tigerman, Wraygunn, Linda Martini and Capitão Fausto.

In the course of history of Portuguese-speaking territories a variety of different rhythms and cultures crossed paths. Over time, these encounters resulted in a rich diversity of cultural expressions which, in turn, have been translated into innovative musical languages. In this session with invited musicians, programmers and journalists we propose a journey through the history of Lusophone urban sounds by presenting, hearing and discussing examples of music and rhythms that reflect the originality and creativity of musical production in Portuguese-speaking countries.

Rui Miguel Abreu has been a music journalist for 28 years and is now one of the most respected voices in this field. He is a senior writer for Portugal's main music mag Blitz and also a senior radio host on national station Antena 3, where he is the resident hip hop specialist with a weekly two-hour show. He is also behind the Electric Africa radio show on RDP Africa, did A&R work for imprint Valentim de Carvalho and curates for several music festivals. He also owns and manages rimasebatidas.pt., a digital music magazine.

Pedro Coquenão started out at Radio Marginal, where he was a radio DJ, music programmer and head of station. He created Radio Fazuma, a show based on Reggae and African Music. On Antena 3 (National Public Radio), Pedro Coquenão started to broadcast Musica Enrolada while on MTV Portugal he ran the music programming and Talent and Music Management. In 2007 he started the radio show Batida on Antena 3, showcasing the new African-influenced electronic music. One year later his first track Bazuka came out. Now Pedro has three albums out and is touring extensively.

Keyboard extraordinaire, João Gomes is an essential part of the Portuguese soul scene from the 90's playing with groundbreaking bands such as Cool Hipnoise and Space Boys. Today he tours the world with Ana Moura and has several projects where his tropical roots are best displayed.

Musician / Founder, Os Sons da Lusofonia

Carlos Martins is a saxophonist, jazz musician and composer. He is known for his artistic works, compositions and collaborations in contemporary music, jazz and world music, both in Portugal and abroad as well as his conceptual works as artistic director and producer. He is the founder of Os Sons da Lusofonia, a non‐profit cultural organization based in Lisbon that works on cultural projects focusing on social and educational community work, based on music and other performing.

An industry hustler, João is one of the founders of Porto finest electro-rock band X-WIFE. Today he tours the country and some places in Europe with a new band called WHITE HAUS. In the 90’s João established himself as a promoter in London where he also gained a great deal of reputation for amazing electro-clash dj sets under the alias of Dj Kitten.

John is founder of one of Portugal’s finest pop bands, The Gift. He has toured the country for the last 20 years and has been the main responsible for the band’s promotion and marketing. This year they released a new album produced by Brian Eno.
