JU.LIA
JU.LIA, based in Lisbon, is a DJ, ethnomusicologist, audio/radio producer, and live music programmer. She plays an eclectic selection of music from around the world, blending sounds from near and far, old and new. She is particularly interested in liminal spaces and the connections between different genres in her DJ sets, focusing on and exploring percussion and rhythms primarily.
Over the past 16 years, she has lived and/or traveled through Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, and Cape Verde to research their music and studied ethnomusicology at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. Because of this, she is very interested in, and always eager to learn about, the music of Latin America, Africa, and their diasporas. This is not her only musical interest – expect to hear the unexpected as she incorporates things like experimental electronic music from Japan or psychedelic rock from the UK into her sets. JU.LIA has played at various clubs and venues in London and Lisbon, including Five Miles, the Bussey Building, LuxFrágil, Musicbox, Casa do Capitāo, and Arroz Estúdios.
She also hosted radio programs on SOAS, Aaja, and Netil Radio, as well as Lisbon’s East Side Radio. JU.LIA is from the UK, where she lived for nearly a decade in South London, amidst the burgeoning jazz scene of London, which became one of her passions. Additionally, she works in programming at one of London’s most recognized venues, the Barbican Centre.
