Ilda Vaz (PT)
Ilda Vaz, an artist, composer, and vocalist in the group Batukaderas Bandeirinhas Pan-Africanist. Born in Cape Verde, the daughter of parents who were hired to work in São Tomé and Príncipe, the singer and composer settled in Portugal, where her ‘voice is an anthem,’ considering singing and Batuku as the preservation of ancestral tradition. She fights for a dignified and just life, starting from self-constructed neighborhoods in Greater Lisbon. Ilda has faced – and continues to face – the violence of racism, an experience she shared as part of the research project AFRO-PORT – Afrodescendência em Portugal e Discursos Memorialistas e a Construção da História (Afrodescendence in Portugal and Memorialist Discourses and the Construction of History).
