José Valente (PT)
Considered to be one of the most innovative violists of his generation, José Valente continues to develop an intense musical activity defined by the irreverence, contemporaneity and virtuosity of his playing and composing. With a PhD in Contemporary Art by unanimous distinction by the University of Coimbra, he has performed in many hall and venues across the world such as Carnegie Hall (invited to be soloist by Paquito d’Rivera) or the Bookaroo Festival (India) and worked with, among others, Dave Douglas, Alberto Conde or Don Byron. Awarded with an honourable mention at Composition Award Lopes-Graça 2009, among other awards, he was also entitled with The Hannah S. and Samuel A. Cohn Memorial Foundation Endowed Fellowship (U.S.A.). He has been composing and collaborating with several artists and musicians from de contemporary scene, with works such as “Sonata for Viola and Empty Cube” curated by João Silvério; “Ninguém é Original” for the International Centre José de Guimarães; “Sagrado” soundtrack for Ruptura Silenciosa; “Unconnected” soundtrack for Mafalda Deville’s dance show; “Passaporte” for viola solo, a Antena2/RTP commission for the 32nd Edition of Prémio Jovens Músicos award; and recently “Embalo para Bernardo” dedicated to Bernardo Sassetti, for the album “The Wake of an Artist” by Alberto Conde Iberian Roots Trio, released by Clean Feed records. His latest album “Serpente Infinita” received 5/5 stars by jazz.pt magazine, continues to be praised by national and international critics and was recently distinguished with the Carlos Paredes 2019 Award.
